Wellness products, from supplements to functional foods and personal health products, are often designed to be used regularly. That makes one metric more important than any other: whether customers keep coming back.
The subscription maths
Average customer life = 1 ÷ Monthly churn rate
If 20% of subscribers cancel each month, the average subscriber stays for 1 ÷ 0.2 = 5 months.
A worked example
Numbers in this example are illustrative.
- Subscription price: ₹1,200 a month
- Contribution margin: 55%, or ₹660 a month
- CAC: ₹1,500
At 5 months’ average life: LTV = ₹660 × 5 = ₹3,300. LTV to CAC = ₹3,300 ÷ ₹1,500 = 2.2x
Improve retention to 7 months: LTV = ₹660 × 7 = ₹4,620. LTV to CAC = ₹4,620 ÷ ₹1,500 = about 3.1x
Two extra months of retention improve the economics by about 40%, without spending more on acquisition.
Why investors care so much
A wellness brand with strong retention builds predictable, recurring revenue. Predictable revenue is easier to plan, easier to fund, and typically valued more highly than one-off sales.
What to show investors
- Cohort retention curves: What share of each month’s customers are still buying after 3, 6, and 12 months.
- Churn by product and channel.
- LTV to CAC, calculated on contribution, not revenue.
- Payback period on acquisition costs.
How to improve retention
- Onboarding: Help customers use the product correctly and see results.
- Reminders: Timed to when customers are likely to run out.
- Flexible subscriptions: Pause and skip options often reduce outright cancellations.
- Education and community: Content that builds trust in the product.
A note on claims
Wellness marketing must stay within the rules for health-related claims. Overpromising can bring regulatory risk and damage trust, which in turn hurts retention.
FAQs
What’s a good retention rate for wellness brands?
It varies by product type and price. Track your own cohorts and focus on improving the trend.
Should every wellness brand offer subscriptions?
Only if the product is naturally used regularly. Forcing subscriptions on occasional-use products increases churn.
How do I calculate churn?
Divide the number of subscribers who cancelled in a month by the number active at the start of that month.
