Once you’ve raised money, a regular investor update is one of the simplest ways to build trust. Done well, it also makes your next raise easier, because your investors have watched your progress month by month.

A simple structure

1. Headline

One or two sentences on how the month went overall.

2. Key numbers

Numbers in this example are illustrative.

Contribution margin (after marketing)18%15%+3 pts

Cash in bank₹1.4 crore₹1.55 crore-₹15 lakh
Runway9 months9 months–

3. Highlights

Two or three wins: a new channel, a strong product launch, a key hire.

4. Challenges

What didn’t go well, and what you’re doing about it. This section builds more trust than any highlight.

5. Asks

Specific help investors can give: introductions to retailers, candidates for a role, advice on a decision.

6. Next month’s priorities

Two or three focus areas, so investors know what to look for next time.

Tips that make updates work

  • Send on a fixed day, for example by the 10th of each month.
  • Use the same metrics every time, so trends are easy to follow.
  • Share bad news early. Investors dislike surprises far more than problems.
  • Keep it short. Most can be read in five minutes.

If you already prepare a monthly MIS report, most of your investor update is already done.

FAQs

Should I send updates before I raise?

Yes. Sending short updates to potential investors you’ve met is a good way to show consistent progress before you ask for money.

Monthly or quarterly?

Monthly is common in early stages. Quarterly can work for later-stage or more stable businesses.

What if the month was bad?

Send it anyway, on time, with a clear explanation and plan. Consistency matters most when results are weak.
